The $600 Device Designed to Upgrade Workers, Not Replace Them

Researchers have developed a roughly $600 open-source “train-and-assist” workstation designed to help laboratory novices perform a complex sample-pooling procedure. The device guides users step by step, tracks samples, measures performance and detects mistakes in real time. In testing, it reduced errors and improved users’ accuracy, while the researchers also found evidence that some of the skill remained after the device was removed. The immediate application is diagnostic testing, where combining several samples before molecular analysis can reduce costs and expand testing capacity. But the broader idea may be more significant. Most technological progress is framed around automation: build a machine that can perform a difficult task and remove the human from the workflow. This project explores a different model — using technology to make more people capable of skilled work. That makes the research worth covering beyond its immediate medical application. It raises a larger question about the future of work: rather than asking only which workers technology can replace, should we also be asking which workers technology can upgrade?
